Challenge Rules

My love of challenges is widely known… and with my overly creative mind, it only makes sense that, eventually, I would turn to writing my own challenges. It took a while for me to get up the nerve to actually write a fully original challenge. Being that those are not easy to write and test, many of the challenges I have written are ultimately inspired by another challenge. I try very hard to make sure to credit the original challenge writers (if I can find them) when I do a challenge - and have even gone so far as to get the writer’s permission to adapt their challenge for my use.

The first original challenge I actually wrote was my Apartment Switch Challenge, which, ultimately, was inspired by the Drifter Challenge, which is one of my favorite challenges of all time. That challenge took me months to write, and a couple years to fully test. It’s also the ONLY challenge I’ve written or edited that I have, ultimately, done a full test run on with both difficulties played. I’m working on testing the others, but I didn’t feel the need to make sure they were possible as much as the Switch.

After the switch, there have been others, and there are some that are in the works as I write this (as well as some others that are mere errant thoughts or ideas floating around my head). Therefore, this section will continue to grow. I will make every effort to describe the challenges on this page through the page excerpts to make it easier for you to pick out which, if any, you want to play yourself. I also split my challenges up between what I think are the two main types of challenges: build challenges and gameplay challenges. This should make it easier to figure out what the challenge will entail.

One final note: if you like one of my challenges, and find that you want to change or adapt the rules for yourself or others to play, I am 100% okay with that. All I ask is that you credit me in your write-up and maybe put a link to the original challenge instead of saying the whole thing was written by you. Beyond that, enjoy these challenges! If you have any questions or comments about any of them, feel free to post them!

Build & CAS Challenges

Build & CAS Challenges
I love building. So it’s only natural that eventually I started writing build challenges, too. Most of my build challenges are month-long shell challenges that I tour live on my Twitch channel. However, you are more than welcome to pick and choose any of my old shell challenges to play whenever you like. If you upload it, and stop by my Twitch channel on a Sims day, I will tour it for free! I try to make all my shell challenges (or as many of them as possible) into brain puzzles, or thought experiments, so they are fun to play at any time. Check my Shell Challenges page to get more information on these. I will point out that I also list one exception here. First Exception - my Winchester Mystery House adaptation. It's MOSTLY about the build, but involves some game play.

Short(er) Legacy Challenges

Short(er) Legacy Challenges
This list is specifically a list of what I consider "shorter" gameplay challenges. These are all 11 generations or less challenges. All challenges included here are written, adapted or collaborated on by me over the years that I have been playing Sims 4. If you're looking for a longer or more involved challenge, check out the two Epic Challenge sections below! My history with challenges involves a LOT of starting challenges, and very little finishing them. I always find something I would like to change.. Or something that sounds better… so, I started writing my own challenges. It all began with the Apartment Switch, which is an original challenge based on the Drifter Challenge, and designed to be a continuation of that challenge. This challenge took me ages to write, and even longer to test and finally publish. But in the end, it was all worth it, because it’s a super challenge, and really makes use of the strengths of the City Living pack. After that, I dabbled with some other challenges, updated and changed the rules on some, and came up with a few others on my own. These include my Mermaid Legacy, as well as a collaborative werewolf legacy called the Lunar Lineage. Currently, I have another fully original concept challenge (my Misery2Mansions) in the works, as well as a super cool adaptation of the Asylum challenge that is interactive for streamers. Eventually, I will be making a version that will work for solo players, as well, which will be a lot of fun. Also have a possible idea for a Backwards ISBI challenge concept. So, feel free to look around, find something you like, and even take one of my ideas and make it yours. Just remember to credit me (and anyone else you use as the inspiration), and you can do what you like with my challenges! Welcome in!

Original Epic Challenges

Original Epic Challenges
I have a rather self-destructive tendency towards very long and involved challenges. When I started making my first longer challenges, I started by adapting challenges that others had made, and extending them into the ridiculously long territory. Then, I braved making an epic challenge of my own. First it was the Master Simmer Challenge - a challenge about experiencing everything that Sims 4 has for you. Another Challenge that does this for you is one of my Adapted Challenges, my Extended Not So Berry (found in the next section). Then, I really went out on a ledge and went for a real tough challenge to write. This challenge, the Timeline Adventure Challenge, has become by "baby". I adore it in so many ways. It's a story, it's a legacy, it's a way to experience history, and it can be played in so many different ways. Going the full CC route is one of my favorite ways, but it's entirely possible to play it without any CC at all. If you are in ANY way interested in history or story-telling, this is a challenge for you. Eventually, I'm sure, I'll end up writing another crazy long challenge of my own, but for now, I'm pretty happy with the two I've got. Enjoy!

Adapted & Updated Epic Challenges

Adapted & Updated Epic Challenges
As I said above, I have a rather self-destructive tendency towards very long and involved challenges. When I started making my first longer challenges, I started by adapting challenges that others had made, and extending them into the ridiculously long territory. Basically, I wanted something more out of each challenge. Not So Berry, I felt, needed to be updated for all the new packs and be a full tour of what the Sims 4 is about.. so that's what I did. The Decades Challenge - wasn't as realistic as I would have liked, it needed .. more death, more random-ness, and more historical events.. so that's what I did. These challenges have become quite popular, so much so that there have been requests for my to "adopt" other long challenges that have been seemingly abandoned by their original authors. One in particular caught my eye as being something I was very much interested in - the Build a World Challenge - so I'm in the process of updating, adapting, and preparing it for a full launch on my site. Expect to see that soon after this website migration is complete. (The challenge will likely be ready mid to late November 2023.) Also, if you like what you see here, and want to expand on change something on ANY of my challenges, feel free - as long as you credit me for my ideas in your write-up!

Interactive Challenges

Interactive Challenges
As a streamer and a challenge writer, it only makes sense that eventually, I would write a challenge designed for streamers that is interactive with chat. I based it on the Asylum Challenge of old, but it's more than that. It's a three-phase competition, with each phase being completely different in the way sims can gain points and get to the next phase. It is currently in it's second season on my twitch channel (https://twitch.tv/illusorythrall), and I consider it to be in it's final beta testing. Yes, eventually I WILL be making a version for solo players based in spin wheels for the "chat" interactions, but until I have the original challenge fully complete, I don't feel ready to adapt it for solo play. Beyond this Asylum Challenge, I do have ideas for future interactive streamer challenges... but, jeez.. one thing at a time!!

I am a 45 year old American wife, mother, and gamer. I’ve lived in the Midwest most of my life, and enjoy it for the changing seasons. My favorite movie is Labyrinth, my favorite game is Sims 4, and I have tattoos related to both. My favorite colors are purple, red, and green. When I’m not playing games (which is rare) I also enjoy reading and crafting. I’m also an animal lover, and have had many types of pets over the years. Currently, I have a dog named Cassie who is a Jack Russel / Beagle mix and three young fancy rats (all of whom are rescues). I run this Sims 4 Blog where I post screenshots and stories about the different challenges I play. Also here are the Sims 4 challenges I've written, and a place for me to store all the Sims 4 knowledge I've gotten over the years. I am also a Sims 4/variety streamer on Twitch for my mental health, fun, and to meet new people. I have also recently been accepted to the EA Creator Network, which is a dream come true! I look forward to meeting you!
